Intervention for
Tics/Tourette’s
CBIT involves training yourself to be aware of your tics & the urge to tic; training ourself to use the competing response when we have the urge to tic; and making changes in daily life that can help reduce the urge to tic.
KEY POINTS ABOUT CBIT
Focus on awareness: teaches you to become highly aware of the sensations or urges that occur before a tic, known as "premonitory urges."
Using a competing response, which is deliberate action that is incompatible with the tic and is performed when the urge to tic arises.
Stress management: incorporates relaxation techniques like deep breathing to help manage stress, which can sometimes trigger or worsen tics.
Individualized approach:
Treatment plans are tailored to each person's specific tics and situations that might trigger them.
Family involvement is especially important for kiddos. Family members are involved in the therapy process to provide support and learn how to best manage the individual's tics at home.
